St. Sophia Cathedral

It is the oldest survived church that was built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise. This majestic 13-domed church became a Holy place of worship for ancient Kyivites, as well as a major cultural and political center in Kyivan-Rus. The first library and school was also there. The complex of buildings (2 churches, bell tower, school, monks' cells, the residence of the Metropolitan) was added on up until the 19th century mostly in Renaissance and Ukrainian Baroque styles. It is a national shrine and is under the patronage of UNESCO. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery - National Historical and Cultural Landmark.

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery

Is situated on a hill overlooking the Dnipro River. Founded in 1051 by monks, its spectacular structures were added on over the years in classical, Byzantine and Ukrainian Baroque styles. Spread over the hills along the bank of the Dnipro River the Lavra Monastery is a "must see" visit. This functioning monastery consists of numerous churches, towers, and miles of underground tunnels (caves) with ancient crypts and ecclesiastical objects. The most interesting museums of Ukraine are also located on the ground of Monastery. Among them are the Museum of Historical Treasures and Jewellery, the Museum of Ukrainian Decorative and Applied Art, the Museum of Miniatures.

The Museum of Historical Treasures and Jewellery

The hub of the complex is a gigantic titanium female figure-108 meters (40 m-pedestal & 68 m-figure), to compare - Statue of Liberty in New York has the size of 100 meters (65+35 m.). The museum's exhibits inside consist of 8,000 objects reflecting various stages and aspects of World War II.

The memorial "Babiy Yar"

"Babiy Yar" must be the most sorrowful place in Kyiv. To perpetuate the memory of killed, mainly Jews, in 1941, 29-30 September, 2 monuments were erected: one of them is soviet, the another, erected in 1991, commemorates the memory of 33770 executed Jews. Nowadays a construction of a big Peace Centre began in Babiy Yar, which will have no analogues in the World.

St. Volodymyr`s Cathedral

Built in 1882 in neo-Byzantine style; its beauty is dramatic. This is the Seat of the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchy. Its services are conducted in Ukrainian.

St. Andrew's Cathedral

Designed in 1754 by the Italian architect Bartholomeo Rastrelli, it is one of the few buildings to have survived intact with no reconstruction or significant damage. The single-domed cathedral, with its five lesser cupolas, seems to hover over the city. Its site was chosen because it was here that the Apostle Andrew, who first preached gospels in Kyivan- Rus, erected a cross. The church was built at the behest of Elizabeth, Peter the Great's pious daughter who visited Kyiv in 1744.

Russian Art Museum
