The Monument to Duke Richelieu in Odessa
The Monument to Duke Richelieu in Odessa

Odessa, often called “The Pearl of the Black Sea”, is one of the Ukrainian top cities in culture, science, education, literature, music and many other spheres of life.

The city has a vibrancy all of its own due to its cosmopolitan history. Indeed, a close look at those who played a part in its emergence brings one to the conclusion that Odessa has always been a strikingly international place. Its first builders, the brothers Joseph and Felix de Ribas were of Spanish extraction. Franz de Volant, the first city planner, was a Dutchman. Duke Emmanuel de Richelieu, the first province and city Governor, was French, and so was his friend and successor, Count Alexandre de Langeron. General Coble, the city commandant, was English, Governor General Mikhail Vorontsov was a Russian prince, Grigoriy Marazli, a Greek, headed the municipal government. Italians were predominant among the architects: F.Boffo, A.Bernardazzi, G.Toricelli and F.Morandi, to name a few. As for the populace, it was a mix from the very start: Ukrainians and Greeks, Russians and Jews, Moldavians and Poles, Bulgarians and Germans, as well as Italians, Frenchmen, Turks and Tatars. Sincere tolerance has always been the spirit among all the ethnic groups inhabiting Odessa. By the way, to be an Odessavite means to be a person of special nation, the peculiarities of which are humor and optimistic approach to life.

Female monastery in Chernigov

Chernihiv is one of the most ancient towns in Ukraine, and has been affectionately described as "a land forgotten by time". It is now the administrative, economic and cultural center of the region. The city is situated on the banks of the Desna River, 141 kilometers north of Kyiv and has a population of 300,000. The history of the city goes back to the time of Old Rus, a period when monumental architecture, literature, crafts and trade flourished. It was one of the most important centers of Kyivan Rus so it is no wonder many places of historical interest are found here today. Five out of the twenty-five architectural landmarks of the 11th - 12th centuries have been preserved and are opened to the public for exploration and enjoyment.

Kamyanets-Podilsky castle
Kamyanets-Podilsky castle

Kamyanets-Podilsky, one of the oldest cities in the Ukraine, is considered a phenomenon of great cultural importance. A rocky island skirted by the tight loop of the Smotrich River flowing in a picturesque canyon, served as a unique pedestal on which over more than a thousand years both well-known and anonymous masters created a miracle in stone. Kamyanets-Podilsky is striking for the harmonious blend of landscape and architecture.

The Old City's past is full of mystery. The precise age of Kamyanets-Podilsky has not until recently been ascertained. Some historians claimed that the city was founded at the beginning of our era by the Dacians during the Roman-Dacian wars. Allegedly, it was named Petridava or Klepidava (from the Greek "petra" or the Latin "lapis" meaning "stone" and the Dacian "dava" meaning "city").
